MARPOL Annex IV regulates the discharge of sewage from ships and applies to all vessels of 400GT and above, and to ships of any size certified to carry 15 or more persons, when operating on international voyages. The revised MARPOL Annex IV, as amended by MEPC.227(64), establishes discharge standards for both treated and untreated sewage, special area requirements—including the Baltic Sea special area where strict no-discharge rules apply—and the requirement to maintain adequate holding tank capacity or sewage treatment plant (STP) operation. Superyachts, with large guest accommodations and significant sewage production during charter periods, must manage their sewage systems carefully to remain in compliance. Port state control inspections in the Baltic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean regularly include sewage management in their scope. This package provides a clear, practical Sewage Management Plan and the documentation to support it.

Who Needs This

Any superyacht of 400GT and above, or any vessel certified to carry 15 or more persons regardless of size, requires documented sewage management procedures under MARPOL Annex IV. Vessels operating in or transiting MARPOL Annex IV special areas—particularly the Baltic Sea—face the most stringent restrictions and need clear operational procedures for their STP and holding tank systems. Charter yachts with high guest turnover generate substantial sewage volumes that must be managed through a combination of treatment and port reception facility discharge. This plan is appropriate for all superyachts with STP equipment, holding tank systems, or both.

What’s Included

Sewage Management Plan Template

A fully structured Word document covering all aspects of superyacht sewage management under MARPOL Annex IV: system description (STP type and certification, holding tank capacities, discharge valves and connections), operational procedures for STP operation and maintenance, holding tank management procedures, discharge zone compliance procedures (including Baltic Sea special area no-discharge requirements), grey water management procedures, port reception facility procedures, and record-keeping requirements. The template addresses both black water (sewage) and grey water separately, reflecting the different regulatory treatment of each.

Companion Guide

A practical completion guide explaining each section of the Sewage Management Plan—how to document your STP specifications and certification, how to determine your discharge obligations in different operating areas, how to set holding tank management procedures for charter periods, and what MARPOL Annex IV inspections look for. Includes a zone reference table covering the key discharge restrictions for the Baltic, Mediterranean, and Caribbean.

Quick Reference Card

A laminate-ready card for the engine room and crew mess covering the key discharge restrictions by zone, the STP operational indicators to monitor, and the holding tank capacity management procedures during port approaches.

Regulatory Compliance

This Sewage Management Plan satisfies MARPOL Annex IV requirements as amended by MEPC.227(64). It reflects Baltic Sea special area requirements under MARPOL Annex IV Regulation 11. It is accepted by the Red Ensign Group, Marshall Islands, Malta, and Bahamas flag states, and meets the sewage management inspection expectations of Paris MOU, Caribbean MOU, and other regional PSC regimes.

  4. Establish your STP operational and maintenance procedures with your chief engineer
  5. Define your holding tank management procedures for different operating areas
  6. Display the Quick Reference Card in the engine room near the STP control panel
  7. File the completed plan with your MARPOL documentation

Why Choose Our Template

This Sewage Management Plan was developed with direct reference to MARPOL Annex IV enforcement standards and the specific challenges of managing sewage on large yachts during intensive charter periods. The companion guide addresses the grey area between black water and grey water discharge—a source of frequent confusion in superyacht operations—in plain, practical terms. The zone reference table in the companion guide saves the master and chief engineer from having to research discharge restrictions each time they enter a new operating area. When MARPOL Annex IV special area requirements change, the package is updated and existing customers receive the revision at no additional cost.
